When uploading your own images and artwork in the Design Studio, following a few best practices will make customizing easier and your t-shirts just that much better when you get them.
First, files can be uploaded in the following formats:
.gif, .png, .jpg, .bmp, .tif, .ai, .eps, .pdf, and .psd
Second, consider the resolution of the image you’re uploading. Below are explanations and recommendations for the two primary types of digital images — raster and vector.
We recommend 150 dpi or greater for the best printing results. Don’t know what we’re talking about? Let us explain.
Raster images, the more common of the two, are images that are made up of a grid of square pixels, that when viewed all together, look like a seamless image. Typical file types are .jpg, .png, .gif, .tif, .psd, and .bmp.
Raster images that have more pixels can print larger than images with fewer pixels. As you try to enlarge a raster image, the once small, unnoticeable pixels get larger and make the image look blocky or blurry. For this reason, it’s important that the image you upload has enough pixels to print at the size you’d like so that there is no loss in quality.
The number of pixels can either be expressed as the total number — like 1500 pixels wide x 1200 pixels tall — or as density, usually referred to as the image’s resolution. This number is given in dpi (dots-per-inch) and for our printing purposes, it’s best if your image is 150 dpi or greater to ensure the best results.
This means that if you'd like to print your uploaded image at 4” x 4” for a typical left chest placement, your image would only need to be 600 pixels x 450 pixels. If instead you’d like to print your image across the whole front at 12” x 18”, it’s best if it’s 1500 pixels x 1800 pixels. You can usually find this information by right clicking on the image file, selecting properties, and looking under details.
If your image doesn't quite meet this recommendation, you’re still free to use it and if there’s any concern about your design’s print quality we’ll be sure to contact you.
Be sure to outline text so any fonts print the way you’ve designed them.
For those that are unfamiliar, vector images are made up of crisp lines called paths and angles called anchors. Instead of the square pixels used in raster images, vector images use these paths to precisely outline each shape resulting in a smooth and never blurry image. Typical file types are: .ai, .eps, .pdf, and .cdr.
This means that vector images can also be enlarged indefinitely without ever compromising quality, so there are no concerns about resolution or dimensions like there are for raster images. However, these types of images are generally less common and customers often only use them if they’ve made them themselves or gotten them from a designer they’re working with.

Bulk/Group Orders, Specific Color Matching, Larger Variety of Products
Screen printing is probably what you think of when you think about t-shirt printing. It's the traditional t-shirt printing method in which each color in a design is separated out and burned to individual fine-mesh screens. Ink is then transferred to the shirt through the screen. Teams, organizations, and businesses usually opt for screen printing because it's extremely cost-effective for printing large custom apparel orders.
The first thing we do is separate out the colors in your logo or design using graphic software. A mesh stencil (screen) is then created for each color in the design (keep that in mind when ordering screen prints because each color adds to the cost). To create the stencil, we begin by coating the fine mesh screen with an emulsion. Once dried, we "burn" the artwork into the screen by exposing it to a bright light. We now have a screen for each color in the design which are then used as stencils for printing onto the product.
Now that we have our screens we need our ink. Similar to what you’d see in a paint store, ink is mixed for each color in the design. Screen printing allows for much more exact color matching than other print methods. Ink is placed on its appropriate screen and then we squeegee ink through the mesh screen onto the shirt. The colors are layered on top of one another to create the final design. The final step involves running your shirt through a large dryer to "cure" the ink and prevent it from washing out.
Screen printing is the perfect print method for large orders, unique products, prints requiring vibrant or specialty inks, or color matching specific Pantone values. Screen printing has fewer limitations as to what products and materials can be printed on. The fast run times can make it a very economical option for large orders. However, the labor intensive setup can make it expensive for small runs.
Small Runs, Full Color Photos, Quick Turnaround
Digital printing involves printing a digital image directly onto the shirt or product. It is a newer technology that functions similar to your home inkjet printer. Special CMYK inks are mixed to create the colors in your design. of this, there is no limitation to the number of colors in your design. This makes digital printing a great option for printing photographs and other intricate artwork.
The cost per print is higher than traditional screen printing. However, by avoiding the high setup costs of screen printing, digital printing is much more cost effective for smaller orders (or even a single shirt).
The t-shirt is loaded into an oversized "inkjet" printer. A combination of white and CMYK inks are laid onto the shirt to create the design. Once the print has finished, the shirt is cured using heat to prevent the design from washing out.
Embroidery is the process of sewing a design or logo onto a product with thread. It is typically used to add logos or designs to polos, jackets, and hats.
Embroidery is an age-old process of weaving a design onto fabric using a thread and needle. Today, instead of someone actually sewing a design by hand, a digital file is created that tells a machine how and where to put each stitch. Embroidery works best with simple, low color count logos or artwork. Photographs and artwork with fine detail or small lettering usually can not be embroidered. We'll be sure to contact you if this is the case and recommend ways we can alter your design or suggest other alternatives.
After we receive your order and review your artwork, the first step in the process is to "digitize" your design. This just means we are creating a digital file that contains instructions on how to stitch your artwork. Once digitized, the file is send to the embroidery machine and the design will be sewn out onto the product. Embroidered logos generally use between 1,000 - 7,000 stitches to create your design. Very intricate indeed!

When ordering a wide range of shirt sizes for a screen print order, customers sometimes run into the issue of the design not fitting on the smaller shirts.
There are a few different solutions to the sizing problem.
Option 1 - Create Two Different Sets of Screens
This options looks great because the design is scaled appropriately for each shirt size group. However, since each set of screens must be burned, set up, and run separately this is essentially equivalent to running two different orders. We will typically offer this options as long as there are at least 24 shirts for each set of screens (i.e., 24 youth and 24 adult).
Option 2 - Scale the Artwork Down
A more economical option is to simply re-size your artwork so that it can fit on the smallest size shirt in the order. The downside to this approach is that the design can look smaller than intended on the larger shirts. Typically, with this approach, the artwork will have to be contained in an 8" x 10" print area.
Option 3 - Increase the Shirt Sizes
The last option is to simply adjust the shirt sizes in the order. Generally, this just means eliminating any Youth Small and Youth Medium shirts from your order. Most kids are ok with their shirt being a little loose fitting anyways!
